Summary

Sea levels are rising globally due to melting glaciers and ice sheets, and thermal expansion, with a global rate of 0.5 inches per decade, but in NYC, sea levels have risen a foot over the last 100 years at a rate of 1.2 inches per decade. The NYC Panel on Climate Change projects that sea levels are expected to increase between 8-30 inches by the 2050s and 15-75 inches by the end of the century, causing more frequent "nuisance" flooding, threatening low-lying infrastructure, and increasing storm surges. To address these issues, the Department of City Planning has developed a zoning tool called 'Special Coastal Risk District' to limit density and population growth in vulnerable neighborhoods.
