The STIR/SHAKEN framework uses public-key cryptography to securely transmit caller ID information, allowing voice service providers to verify the identity of callers and block or label illegal robocalls. The FCC estimates that widespread implementation of STIR/SHAKEN could provide monetary benefits exceeding $13.5 billion per year by eliminating fraud and nuisance calls.
