Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a procedure where female genitals are deliberately cut, injured, or changed without medical reason, causing pain and harm. It's usually carried out on young girls before puberty, with four types: Clitoridectomy, Excision, Infibulation, and others. Health consequences include death, severe pain, and broken limbs. FGM is done for cultural and social reasons, such as eligibility for marriage, perceived health benefits, and family honor. Signs of risk include older siblings or cousins who have had FGM, girls talking about a special procedure, or being taken to a country with high FGM prevalence. Signs that FGM has occurred include prolonged absence, frequent toilet use, urinary tract infections, and noticeable behavior changes. If suspected or known, report to the police (101), DSL, and local children's services team, or call 999 if in immediate danger.
