Summary

The "A. Philippide" Institute of Romanian Philology in Iaşi has a long tradition of studying linguistic variation, dating back to 1934 when Iorgu Iordan outlined the directions for linguistic research, including the study of diatopic and diastratic variation. The Department of Dialectology and Sociolinguistics was established in 1949, and since then, researchers have carried out field research on dialects, issued dialectal questionnaires, and published articles and books on linguistic variation. The institute has also developed the New Romanian Linguistic Atlas by Regions, with five volumes published between 1987 and 2014, and three dialectal texts covering the area from southern Moldavia to the south of Iaşi county. In 2000, the team was rejuvenated with new researchers, and interdisciplinary cooperation with computer scientists began, marking a new landmark in the development of research in dialectology at the institute.
