Summary

Saudi relations with Iran have been tense for over two centuries due to differences between Wahhabi and Shi'ite clerical leadership. Tensions increased after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, but have improved since the election of Iranian President Ali Mohammed Khatami in 1997. Saudi Arabia has maintained diplomatic relations with Iran and sought to improve ties, despite concerns. Cooperation has increased, with Iran and Saudi Arabia working together on oil production and resuming flights between the two countries. Saudi leaders see Khatami's election as an opportunity to establish "correct" and possibly "friendly" relations, and have held informal talks with the Iranian government. Crown Prince Abdullah led a delegation to the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Tehran in 1997, calling for unity and cooperation among Muslim nations. Former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani visited Saudi Arabia in 1998 to improve relations, meeting with King Fahd to discuss regional and bilateral ties.
