Summary

Intel's Optane DC Persistent Memory Module (Optane DC PMM) is a nonvolatile memory DIMM that supports byte-granularity accesses with access times similar to DRAM and provides data storage that survives power outages. Optane DC memory has higher latency (346 ns) than DRAM but lower latency than an SSD, and its bandwidth is asymmetric, with a max read bandwidth of 6.6 GB/s and a max write bandwidth of 2.3 GB/s. The Optane DC PMM can be used as a large memory device with a DRAM cache or as a persistent storage device, and it can enable user-space persistence, allowing applications to explicitly control their writes into persistent Optane DC media. Researchers found that Optane DC memory can improve the performance of certain applications, such as Kyoto Cabinet and RocksDB, by almost 2× when used in App Direct mode.
