Summary

The "German Today" research project aims to determine regional variation in standard German spoken by young and older educated adults, and identify regional features. An extensive corpus of read and spontaneous speech is being compiled, with recordings from 160 cities in the German-speaking area of Europe. The project focuses on phonetic variation, with participants reading texts, naming pictures, translating from English, and taking part in sociobiographic interviews and map task experiments. The resulting corpus will comprise over 1000 hours of transcribed speech, enabling analysis of regional standards, linguistic change, and contextual styles.
