Summary

Researchers designed and fabricated optofluidic valves using laser printer lithography, which can be opened by directing optical energy from a solid-state laser to a spot of printed toner, melting an orifice in a polymer layer. The valves were tested on cyclo-olefin copolymer and polyethylene terephthalate films, and their functionality, response time, and laser input energy dependence were reported. The implementation of these optofluidic valves was demonstrated on pressure-driven and centrifugal microfluidic platforms, and they can hermetically isolate on-chip fluid volumes for extended periods. The fabrication and integration of optofluidic valves are compatible with various polymer microfabrication technologies, facilitating the development of fully integrated, reconfigurable, and automated lab-on-a-chip systems.
