Summary

Researchers conducted a comparative analysis of mammalian Y chromosomes to understand their ancestral structure and lineage-specific evolution. They sequenced the male-specific region of the Y chromosome (MSY) from domestic dogs and cats, and combined these with existing MSY data from other species. The study revealed that despite gene gain and loss, the eutherian ancestor retained a core set of 17 MSY genes, which have been constrained by negative selection for nearly 100 million years. The analysis also identified conserved noncoding elements that potentially regulate eutherian MSY genes, and showed that the acquisition of novel ampliconic gene families was accompanied by signatures of positive selection, impacting the degeneration and expansion of MSY gene repertoires in different species.
