Summary

A project team from several National Estuarine Research Reserves developed a method to integrate plant cover data from two common methods: Point-intercept (PI) and Ocular cover (OC). The team assessed over 100 salt marsh vegetation plots in New England using both methods and developed a statistical relationship between them using Regressions Across Morphological Archetypes (RAMA). The results provide a new method to convert PI data into a format compatible with OC data in four simple steps: convert PI to 100 points per plot, normalize to 100% total cover, assign morphological archetypes, and multiply by a correction factor. This transformation method was compared to traditional methods and provided the most statistically similar data to OC, but remains less accurate than data collected with a single method due to inherent differences between the protocols.
