Summary

Minister Dominic LeBlanc hosted a Roundtable on North Atlantic Right Whales, attended by various stakeholders, to find solutions to protect the critically endangered species. The roundtable aimed to reduce human impact on right whales, promote dialogue, and identify partnerships to conserve the species. In 2017, 12 North Atlantic Right Whales died in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, with vessel collisions and fishing gear entanglement being primary factors. The Government of Canada implemented urgent measures, including shutting down the snow crab fishery and implementing a slowdown on certain vessels. The Oceans Protection Plan, a $1.5-billion investment, was introduced to improve marine safety and ocean health. Over 20,000 people participated in consultations, contributing over 200 ideas to reduce impacts on at-risk whales. The roundtable discussion emphasized the need for immediate action, adaptive management, and leadership to protect the North Atlantic Right Whale. Participants stressed the importance of advising industries, developing short-term and long-term strategies, and mitigating market impacts and additional costs for fishers.
