The house, in its current form, was primarily developed by the 3rd Viscount Chilston's forebears in the 19th century. The walls of the house date back to the early 16th century, and it has undergone several transformations over the centuries, including renovations by the Best family in the 18th century and the Douglas family in the 19th century. The Akers-Douglas family, who were related to the Douglas family, inherited the property in 1858 and made significant changes, including the installation of a glass roof in the courtyard and the creation of a long room with columns. The house features several notable elements, including Early Renaissance panels, ancestral portraits, and a highly decorative lincrusta ceiling. The Akers-Douglas family played a significant role in British politics, with Aretas Akers-Douglas serving as Home Secretary in 1902 and receiving a peerage in 1911. The property remained in the family until its sale in 1983.
