Summary

Marteilia refringens, a protozoan parasite, was studied in Thau lagoon, France, in three potential hosts: Mytilus galloprovincialis, Ruditapes decussatus, and Paracartia grani. PCR detected parasite DNA in R. decussatus, but in situ hybridization suggested its non-involvement in the parasite life cycle. In contrast, PCR detection in mussels appeared bimodal, with two peaks in spring and autumn, and histological observations revealed different parasite stages, including mature sporangia. The parasite was also detected in P. grani copepodid stages, supporting the hypothesis of transmission from mussels to copepods and vice versa. Unusual M. refringens cells were observed in the digestive tract and gonad of copepodites, and PCR detection in copepod eggs suggested that eggs could contribute to parasite spreading and overwintering. Mussel retention efficiency measurements showed that all copepod stages could contribute to transmission, especially eggs and nauplii.
