Summary

Approximately 42% of the Legal Amazon is in protected areas, including Conservation Units (UCs) and Indigenous Lands (TIs), which have been effective in reducing deforestation. However, there are formal initiatives to downgrade, downsize, or degazette these protected areas, with 37 initiatives identified involving 48 protected areas. The most common threats to these areas are human occupation, timber harvesting, infrastructure works, and mining. To ensure the integrity of these areas, it is recommended that environmental crimes be punished, sustainable economic activities be promoted, and technical and legal rigor be used for any changes to protected areas. From 2008 to 2009, 37 formal proposals were identified, with 24 concluded and 13 still in progress, resulting in the degazettement of 49,506 km2 of protected areas.
