Summary

Strong westerly, prograde jets have been identified in the martian atmosphere between 10-20 km altitude throughout much of the year in a Mars Global Circulation Model study. The development of data assimilation techniques for Mars now permits the analysis of super-rotation in less idealized cases using an atmospheric reanalysis. This paper reviews recent atmospheric reanalyses to validate previous modeling results, quantify jet amplitudes, and diagnose possible mechanisms supplying angular momentum to the jets. Super-rotation is observed in the martian atmosphere, with a super-rotating equatorial jet frequently found in re-analysis, and local and global super-rotation requiring the transfer of angular momentum up-gradient with respect to the longitudinal-mean gradient of angular momentum, accomplished by eddy processes.
