Researchers analyzed QuikSCAT scatterometer measurements to diagnose diurnal variability of wind over the ocean, finding a statistically significant signal associated with the sea breeze along most of the world's coastlines and mid-ocean in easterly trade wind belts. The study used vector wind fields from the QuikSCAT satellite to examine the amplitude, direction, and offshore extent of the sea breeze, with significant diurnal variability present in these areas. The sea breeze was characterized by a reversal of wind on a daily basis, with winds flowing onshore in the evening and offshore in the morning, and was strongest at points closest to the coast, decreasing with distance offshore. Significant sea breezes were found along most coastlines, including the western Mediterranean Sea, west coast of Africa, and Indonesian Archipelago, but were diminished poleward of 50° latitude.
