Summary

Fermilab E781 plans to measure γ-Sigma and γ-pion interactions, including pion polarizabilities and radiative transitions, to test chiral symmetry and baryon chiral perturbation theory predictions. The experiment will also measure Sigma hyperon polarizabilities and radiative transitions, providing insight into the magnetic moment of the s-quark and testing predictions of baryon chiral perturbation theory. Previous experimental and theoretical results for γπ and γΣ interactions are discussed, and the E781 experiment is described. The Sigma polarizabilities can be obtained from Compton scattering differential cross-section measurements, probing the internal structure of baryons and mesons. Radiative transitions to the Σ∗(1385) can provide a measure of the magnetic moment of the s-quark. Theoretical calculations for Sigma polarizabilities are discussed, including a non-relativistic quark bag calculation and heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
