Summary

Microblogging is a new form of communication where users describe their current status in short posts distributed via instant messages, mobile phones, email, or the web. Twitter, a popular microblogging tool, has seen significant growth since its launch in 2006. This paper presents observations of the microblogging phenomenon by studying Twitter's social network, including its topological and geographical properties. The study finds that people use microblogging to discuss daily activities, seek or share information, and connect with others who have similar intentions. The main types of user intentions are daily chatter, conversations, sharing information, and reporting news, with users playing different roles in different communities.
