Summary

The GSI UNILAC's 108 MHz Alvarez DTL, which accelerates ions from 1.4 MeV/u to 11.4 MeV/u, is being replaced due to material fatigue. A new post-stripper DTL is being designed, with an optimized drift tube shape to increase shunt impedance and varying stem orientations to mitigate parasitic rf-modes. Beam dynamics simulations were performed using the TraceWin code for 238U28+ ions, and the results show a transverse emittance growth of up to 3% and a longitudinal emittance growth of about 2% along the first tank. The design of the intertank section is not finalized, but it will consist of quadrupoles, a phase probe, a current transformer, a valve, a profile grid, and a buncher. Beam dynamics simulations for the complete Alvarez DTL show a transverse emittance growth of about 4% and a longitudinal emittance growth of about 1.5%. The new DTL design can also transport low-energy beams, and simulations show that it can deliver beams with energies from 3.0 MeV/u to 11.7 MeV/u with a short bunch length.
