Summary

Al voordat kinderen naar de basisschool gaan, zijn er meetbare verschillen in vaardigheden tussen de verschillende sociaaleconomische groepen in Nederland. Kinderen van ouders met een lager inkomen of opleidingsniveau presteren minder goed op het gebied van taal en rekenen dan kinderen van ouders met een hoger inkomen of opleidingsniveau. Deze verschillen verdwijnen niet gedurende hun jeugd en schooltijd. Ook kinderen met een migratieachtergrond beginnen gemiddeld met een achterstand in taal en rekenen, maar deze achterstand neemt af met de leeftijd. De verschillen tussen kinderen naar achtergrond zijn aanzienlijk, maar de verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes zijn vaak even groot of groter. Een vroege achterstand in vaardigheden heeft negatieve gevolgen voor de langere termijn. Uit internationaal onderzoek is bekend dat voor- en vroegschoolse educatie en het onderwijs kan bijdragen aan het verkleinen van de ongelijkheid in de vroege jeugd. Voor Nederland is nog onvoldoende bekend in hoeverre de bestaande programma’s en middelen de ongelijkheid helpen verkleinen.
