Summary

Disease control is sustainable if there's an unlimited supply of new disease resistance genes and fungicide modes of action that are accessible and safe, and if they're introduced faster than pathogens defeat them. Broad-spectrum systemic modes of action include Azoles (1970s), Strobilurins (1990s), and SDHIs (2010s), with the next new mode of action unknown due to regulatory uncertainty. Years to first detection of resistance for single-site fungicides range from 1-2 to over 20 years, with multi-site fungicides taking over 18 years. Azole efficacy has decreased over time, with variance accounted for ranging from 43.2% to 62.4% for different products.
