Most consumption decisions are routine and not reflected upon, and there is a lack of awareness about climate change and individual roles in it. Reducing residential energy consumption, particularly for space heating, could have a significant impact on the energy transition.

Surveys have revealed that citizens face challenges in reducing their energy consumption, such as insufficient financial resources and complicated energy bills. However, nearly 8 in 10 respondents have been influenced by the EU energy label, and most households would consider investing in energy-saving devices if they provided savings with a payback period of around 4 years.

Collective or social identities can drive pro-environmental purposes, and fostering eco-friendly behavior in the workplace or local communities can encourage sustainable energy choices. Ultimately, individual energy consumers need to contribute to the transition towards sustainable futures, alongside energy providers and the public and private sectors.
