Summary

Irving Burg was born on March 12, 1917, in New York City's Fordham Hospital. His parents, who came to the US from Russia and Romania, separated when he was 5 or 6 due to economic differences. Burg attended 13 grammar schools in New York, mostly in the Bronx and Lower East Side, as his mother moved frequently for work. He had a brother who passed away and several aunts and uncles, including an uncle who was an orthodox rabbi. Burg's father was involved with the Workmen's Circle, a union-oriented organization, while his uncle was a respected figure in the immigrant orthodox community. Burg grew up to be close to his father despite their initial separation and later moved to Chicago at age 15. He remained friends with his father and saw him occasionally, including during his senior year in college when his father helped him with tuition. Burg also had a relationship with his uncle, the rabbi, and his aunts, who were warm and supportive. He and his cousins were close and shared a family joke, and four of his male cousins, including himself, served in combat during World War II and returned uninjured.
