Climate change will disrupt and transform the global economy, politics, and society by 2040, affecting civic space for various civic actors. The climate crisis will impact human rights and development, requiring full engagement of citizens, communities, and civil society. The physical impacts of climate change will result in environmental and economic damage, threatening the enjoyment of human rights and undoing progress in development, global health, and poverty reduction. The International Panel on Climate Change recommends prioritizing climate mitigation and adaptation. Over the next two decades, trends will dramatically change how people live, and a vibrant civic space is essential for participation in shaping the future. The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 2°C, and ideally 1.5°C, above pre-industrial temperatures. However, current actions are not on track to meet this goal, and the planet could warm by more than 4°C by 2100. Climate change is galvanizing a wide range of actors to demand action, and their ability to shape an alternative vision for the future will depend on how states respond to the climate crisis.
