Summary

Krzysztof Penderecki was born on November 23, 1933, in Debica, Poland, and studied composition privately and at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków. His first major success came in 1959, and he gained international recognition with the help of publisher Hermann Moeck and music critic Heinrich Strobel. Penderecki's compositional periods include an early avant-garde phase, a middle period with a neo-romantic return to tradition, and a late period synthesizing modern and traditional elements.

Penderecki's "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" was completed in 1960 and originally titled "8'37"". The piece was later renamed after the composer was struck by its emotional charge during a recording. The work is divided into three parts, with a contrasting middle section and a return to the opening music in the third part. The division between the first two sections is marked by an abrupt change in texture and timbre, preceded by a long, sustained single note and five seconds of silence.

The piece features a 36-voice canon, with Orchestra 2 answering Orchestra 1 as a strict canon at a distance of 12 bars, and a symmetrical axis occurring between bars 42 and 43. The canon is sustained rhythmically and dynamically, with pitches sometimes a fourth or fifth removed. The work also features graphic notation and extended instrumental techniques, with a thick black line indicating a cluster of pitches and individual players grouped differently throughout the work.

The instrumentation includes 52 strings, with 24 violins, 10 violas, 10 cellos, and 8 basses. The players are grouped differently throughout the work, with individual parts entering one after the other in some sections. The piece has been published in several editions, including those by Deshon Music Inc., PWM Editions International, and Belwin-Mills, and has won several awards, including the Fitelberg Composers Competition and the Ministry of Culture and Art Award. The world premiere was held at the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 1961, with the Krakow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrzej Markowski.
