The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) held a discussion with practice leaders and nursing deans to identify challenges and priorities facing practice and academia. Key challenges include workforce shortages, faculty shortages, and budget constraints. Both practice and academia face issues with diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, recruitment of nurses from diverse backgrounds, and the impact of rapidly changing technology. The meeting identified four priorities for addressing the nursing workforce: wellness/well-being, curriculum not matching practice, leadership, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Strategies to address the nursing shortage include challenging the status quo, leveraging academic-practice partnerships, recruiting more diverse nurses, and encouraging nurses interested in teaching. Participants reaffirmed the AONL-AACN Shared Vision for integrating nursing education and practice, suggesting that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging be made the foundation of the five domains.
