Summary

A study of 351 harbor seals in the Gulf of Alaska compared stomach contents and feces to determine the accuracy of using scat analysis to identify prey. The results showed a significant positive correlation between the two methods, but with some discrepancies. Cephalopods were overrepresented in stomach contents and underrepresented in feces, likely due to the regurgitation of beaks. Large fish, such as salmon, may also be underrepresented in scat analysis due to the lack of otoliths. Cartilaginous fish are unlikely to be detected in scats due to their small, diffuse otoliths. Overall, scat analysis can provide accurate information on prey utilization, but with some limitations.
