Summary

Karl Theodor von der Trenck's Master of Science thesis, presented on November 17, 1975, analyzed mercury and cadmium binding proteins in marine mammal tissues. The study compared subcellular fractions of liver and kidney from bearded seals, walrus, and sea lions, finding evidence for two phases of heavy metal accumulation in the cytosol. At low cellular concentrations, proportionally more heavy metal was found in the cytosol, while at higher concentrations, cadmium accumulated less and mercury remained constant. The results showed mercury accumulating in particulate fractions and high molecular weight proteins, whereas cadmium was found in soluble and metallothionein fractions. Liver was the main organ for mercury deposition, and kidney was the major site for cadmium accumulation. The study also found a low correlation between metallothionein content and heavy metal concentration, inconsistent with the induction of metallothionein by high heavy metal concentrations in marine mammals.
