Summary

Fiber Innovation Technology presents synthetic split microfiber technology for filtration, developed by Jeffrey S. Dugan and Edward C. Homonoff. Fine diameter fibers are crucial in filtration applications, with synthetic meltblown fabrics and microglass materials being the main options. However, these materials have limitations, such as meltblown fabrics being weak and expensive, and glass microfibers having length and environmental limitations. A new series of synthetic fine fibers has been developed, which can be spun at standard deniers and easily processed and split into micro-denier fibers. These fibers can be blended and processed with other fibers, and their diameters range from 2-3 microns, with below 1 micron being targeted. The technology was first developed commercially in Japan in the 1960s for synthetic suede fabrics, and has since been improved with segmented fiber cross-sections. The fibers are suitable for filtration applications where mechanisms such as interception, Brownian motion, coalescence, electrostatic effects, and triboelectric effects are dominant.
