Summary

Police recorded crime in Scotland is at one of the lowest levels since 1974, down 22% since 2011-12, and 46% since 2008-09. Violent crime has fallen over the long term, with non-sexual crimes of violence decreasing by 4% in 2020-21. Sexual crimes fell for a second consecutive year, but remain at one of their highest levels. The clear-up rate for all recorded crimes increased to 56.3% in 2020-21, and the number of homicide victims was at a record low of 58. Domestic abuse incidents increased by 4% in 2020-21. Hate crime charges increased, with racial crime being the most commonly reported. Self-reported illicit drug use amongst adults has increased in recent years, with cannabis being the most commonly used drug. The public's perception of local crime rate has improved since 2008-09, with 73% of adults thinking it has stayed the same or reduced. Most adults feel safe walking alone after dark, and 55% say the police are doing a good or excellent job. The number of fires has fallen by 22% in the last decade, and emergency hospital admissions due to assault have decreased by 57% since 2011-12. The number of convictions in Scottish courts has fallen to the lowest level in 10 years, with 75,251 people convicted in 2019-20.
