Summary

Dicranum is a genus of mosses with around 140 species, mostly found in the Northern Hemisphere, and one rare species in Australia. The genus is characterized by its split peristome teeth, and plants grow in turfs with stems that are frequently subflorally branched and densely foliose. Leaves are falcate-secund to variously patent, ovate-lanceolate to linear, and have a long subula. The species Dicranum scoparium is found in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia, and North America, and is highly variable, with Australian specimens having leaves that are serrulate at least at the apex, while New Zealand material tends to have smaller leaves with entire margins.
