Katharina Schaebbicke, Heiko Seeliger, and Sophie Repp conducted two explorative experiments to investigate negative polarity items (NPIs) in different negative contexts in German. The study aimed to provide a better empirical insight into the landscape of German NPIs, as previous research often focused on a limited number of NPIs. The experiments explored the licensing conditions of 60 German NPIs, using a classification system that included superstrong, strong, weak, and superweak NPIs. The results showed seven distinct clusters of NPIs with different licensing patterns, including some that were licensed in questions but not in downward-entailing or anti-additive environments. A second experiment found that the high acceptability ratings for some questions were not due to their interpretation as rhetorical questions. The study's findings have implications for the use of NPIs in experimental studies and the development of theories on NPI licensing.
