Summary

A long-term study of phytoplankton in Lake Mondsee, Austria, spanning over six decades, investigated the impact of environmental stressors such as eutrophication and climate change on phytoplankton structure and biodiversity. The study found that phytoplankton groups with similar taxonomic traits are suitable for tracking structural shifts in phytoplankton assemblages over short-term (biweekly) and long-term (decadal) timescales. The results showed a dome-shaped relationship between net change-dependent persistence of phytoplankton assemblages and observations, with short-term persistence contributing to structural stabilization. Key taxa, such as Planktothrix rubescens, were identified as excellent organisms for tracking environmental constraints due to their short generation time, lifetime adjustment, and re-occurrence over generations.
