Many believe that data can be recovered if overwritten only once or twice, and that up to 35 passes are needed to securely erase data, as proposed by the Gutmann scheme. However, this belief is based on a misunderstanding of the physics of drive functions and magneto-resonance. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images show that the differential in write patterns is too great to allow for the recovery of overwritten data. A single wipe is sufficient to remove trace data and prevent forensic recovery, making data wiping more feasible and removing uncertainty from the industry.
