Summary

Elevated seawater temperatures increase coral disease, which is often microbial in origin, with microbial behaviors like motility and chemotaxis implicated in coral colonization and infection. Researchers found that increasing water temperatures induce two behavioral switches in the coral pathogen Vibrio coralliilyticus, enhancing its performance in tracking chemical signals of its coral host, Pocillopora damicornis. At ≥23 °C, the pathogen's chemotactic ability increased by 460%, and at 30 °C, its chemokinetic ability increased by 457%, demonstrating that increasing temperature can enhance the motile behaviors and host-seeking efficiency of a marine bacterial pathogen.
