Summary

A new electromechanical press was developed for fuel pellet manufacturing, and its compaction cycle was optimized using Finite Element Modeling (FEM) calculations. The press was qualified to produce 400 annular pellets with good geometry parameters. The FEM calculations were used to predict the impact of different parameters, such as powder type and pellet size, on the compaction process. The results showed that the green pellet stress and density gradients are influenced by frictional forces between the powder and tool, and between grains in the powder. The pellet shape and diameter tolerances must be minimized to avoid grinding operations. The press will be set up in a glove box for UO2 manufacturing qualification in 2016.
