Summary

The Apiaceae family has 463 genera and approximately 3500 species, with a nearly cosmopolitan distribution. The sub-Saharan African and Madagascan contingent, comprising 80 genera and 354 species, was poorly studied until recent molecular systematic studies. These studies suggest a southern African origin for Apioideae and Saniculoideae, with many African taxa occupying early diverging positions within the family. A new tribal classification system is proposed for the early diverging lineages of Apioideae, based on molecular, morphological, and anatomical evidence. The system includes eight tribes, five of which are newly described: Annesorhizeae, Choritaenieae, Heteromorpheae, Lichtensteinieae, Marlothielleae, Phlyctidocarpeae, Saniculeae, and Steganotaenieae. The broadened subfamily Apioideae is diagnostically different from other subfamilies in the absence of rhomboidal crystals and the presence of druse crystals scattered throughout the mesocarp.
