Summary

It presents new data showing that word order in East Cree is sensitive to obviation, a phenomenon that grammatically encodes (non)topicality. The analysis supports treating Focus as an interpretation rule not directly encoded in the syntax. East Cree is a non-configurational, polysynthetic, head-marking language with obligatory morphosyntactic obviation, which operates over medium-sized discourse units. The language has a person hierarchy where proximate outranks obviative, and a ranking of grammatical functions where subject outranks object. The direction morpheme on transitive verbs indicates alignment or crossing of these hierarchies. The paper argues that the left periphery of an East Cree sentence plays a role in information packaging instructions, and that an analysis assuming Focus as a functional projection fails to explain the East Cree data.
