L'analyse syntaxique reste un problème complexe, ce qui pousse de nombreuses applications à utiliser des analyseurs superficiels. Cet article présente les notions d'analyse superficielle et profonde, en proposant une caractérisation de la complexité opérationnelle pour l'analyse syntaxique automatique. Il s'agit de distinguer les objets et les relations plus ou moins difficiles à identifier. Les analyseurs superficiels sont rapides et robustes, mais ne fournissent que des informations partielles, tandis que les analyseurs profonds fournissent une description couvrante des constructions de la langue. La combinaison de ces deux approches est possible, soit en utilisant l'analyse superficielle comme pré-traitement pour l'analyse profonde, soit en utilisant les résultats de l'analyseur superficiel comme entrée pour l'analyseur profond. Cette dernière approche nécessite l'adaptation de l'analyseur profond pour prendre en compte les informations construites par l'analyseur superficiel.
