Summary

This article describes a novel approach to the computational modeling of reduplication using 2-way finite-state transducers (2-way FSTs), which can capture virtually all reduplicative processes, including total reduplication, in a convenient, easy-to-design, and linguistically-motivated way. Reduplication is a common word-formation process that involves copying an unbounded or bounded number of segments, and it is found in 75% of the world's languages. However, it has been a challenge for computational linguistics, as most finite-state systems used to model morphology and phonology cannot adequately capture the productivity of unbounded copying in reduplication. The authors show that 2-way FSTs can model reduplication without the difficulties of using 1-way FSTs, and they illustrate how 2-way FSTs can be used to model total and partial reduplication. They also discuss the computational properties and complexity of 2-way FSTs and contrast them with 1-way FSTs, demonstrating that 2-way FSTs are empirically adequate, practically convenient, and linguistically-motivated for modeling reduplication.
