Summary

The chemical analysis of ceramic fabrics from medieval Dorset and its region was studied, focusing on kilns at Hermitage in Dorset and Laverstock in Wiltshire. Eighty sherds were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, and statistical analyses confirmed that the two kiln groups could be separated using data from a few elements. A detailed study of medieval ceramics in Dorset and surrounding counties was conducted, and chemical analyses were carried out on ceramics from twenty-two settlement sites. Multivariate statistical analyses enabled the identification of chemically-identified types, providing a more complete picture of ceramic producers active in the Dorset region during the medieval period.
