Summary

The Mississippi River Delta, which encompasses 40% of the US's coastal wetlands, is experiencing rapid deterioration due to human intervention, resulting in approximately 80% of the nation's coastal wetland losses. To address this issue, a feasibility study was conducted to assess the potential benefits of reintroducing Mississippi River water into the highly degraded Lake Maurepas Swamp in Louisiana through a freshwater diversion. The study aimed to evaluate the current condition of the swamp forests and assess the potential benefits of the diversion, including understanding nutrient assimilation capacity, differentiating influences and responses of the diversion, and determining baseline environmental conditions. The study found that sites near Lake Maurepas had higher salinity levels, while sites near the Amite River Diversion Canal had lower salinity levels and higher bulk densities. The study also aimed to quantify the impact of stressors on the swamp and evaluate the health and primary production of the vegetation.
