Summary

At the solution surface, soap molecules form a monolayer, with their structure depending on the counter ion used. Researchers have used various techniques to study this structure, but none have provided information on the coordination structures of metal ions at the Langmuir monolayer. A new method using X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been developed to study solution surfaces, utilizing a total-reflection polarization-XAFS system. This method has been used to investigate the coordination structures of Mn(II) and Zn(II) ions at the Langmuir monolayer, revealing differences in their structures compared to bulk solutions. The results show that Mn(II) has an octahedral structure on the vertical axis, while Zn(II) adopts a tetrahedral symmetry at the Langmuir monolayer. The method provides new insights into the analysis of liquid surfaces, offering previously unattainable information.
