Summary

Glycine tabacina, a wild relative of soybean, forms a widespread polyploid complex in Australia and the Pacific Ocean. A study of 40 plants found three alleles at the histone H3-D locus, each also found in Australian diploid Glycine species, suggesting multiple origins of the polyploid. The distributions of histone alleles, chloroplast haplotypes, and isozyme alleles were uncorrelated, indicating extensive lineage recombination. This recombination, involving migration and occasional outcrossing, increases the genetic base of the polyploid and may explain its wide colonization. The polyploid originated at least six times, with origins in Australia and colonization of the Pacific occurring within the last 30,000 years. The study suggests that gene exchange among polyploids with different origins is common, enhancing their ability to explore novel adaptive zones and contributing to their success.
