Portuguese cowbell makers, who hold a declaration of intangible cultural heritage for the Manufacture of Cowbells, are in danger of disappearing, with many in their 70s or 80s and transmission of their knowledge at risk. The traditional cowbell, characteristic of the Iberian Peninsula and Atlantic Pyrenees, is also at risk of extinction in Spain and France. The art of cowbell making, which combines blacksmithing, coppersmithing, and music, is a part of pastoralism heritage that is also in danger of extinction. A request for inclusion in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding has been made to preserve this traditional knowledge and craftsmanship.
