Summary

The Post-Gupta period in North India saw the emergence of various regional powers, including the Maitrakas of Valabhi, the Maukharis of Kanauj, Harshavardhana, the Later Guptas of Magadha, Yasodharman of Kanauj, and Kashmir. The Maitrakas were a durable state that grew out of the Gupta Empire, with their capital at Valabhi. The Maukharis, originally tributary rulers, established an independent kingdom in the western Ganges plains around Kanauj. Harshavardhana, of the Pushyabhuti family, ruled in Thanesar and expanded his empire through military campaigns. The Later Guptas challenged the power of the Maukharis, leading to a prolonged war. The Post-Gupta period was marked by the fragmentation of political authority, with various dynasties establishing their kingdoms and often warring with each other.
