Phytophthora root rot is a devastating disease affecting blueberry crops, causing root decay, stunting, and plant death. Symptoms start with lesions on small feeder roots, spreading to larger roots and the root collar, and eventually leading to aboveground symptoms like leaf yellowing, reddening, and marginal scorch. The disease is caused by the soilborne fungus-like organism Phytophthora cinnamomi, which thrives in wet soils. Management requires an integrated approach, including good cultural practices like purchasing disease-free plants, selecting well-drained soil, and avoiding over irrigation. Fungicides can be used as a preventative measure, but they do not cure infections. Infected plants cannot be cured, but a combination of cultural practices and fungicides may help protect emerging roots and sustain plants in early stages of disease development.
