Summary

Researchers used BGC Argo floats to study ocean structure and biological activity during the spring transition in the western North Pacific. The floats collected daily vertical profiles of the water column, measuring oxygen, fluorescence, backscatter, and nitrate from January to April 2018. The data showed that repeated meteorological disturbances caused the mixed layer to deepen, followed by restratification and increased biological productivity. The study found that spring mixing events promote primary productivity by alleviating nutrient and light limitation, and estimated the POC accumulation rate and nitrate decrease rate within the euphotic zone. The results also showed an increase in POC concentrations at depths of 300-400 m and estimated the POC flux at 300 m to be 1.1 mmol C m−2 d−1.
