Summary

Republic Act No. 7586, also known as the NIPAS Act, provides for the establishment and management of the National Integrated Protected Areas System. The Act aims to protect and maintain the natural biological and physical diversities of the environment, and to secure the perpetual existence of all native plants and animals for the Filipino people. The NIPAS shall encompass outstanding and biologically important areas, including habitats of rare and endangered species, and shall be managed to maintain essential ecological processes and life-support systems. The Act establishes eight categories of protected areas, including strict nature reserves, natural parks, and wildlife sanctuaries, and defines key terms such as "protected area," "buffer zones," and "indigenous cultural community." The DENR is tasked with establishing and operationalizing the System, and with submitting maps and legal descriptions of protected areas to Congress within one year of the Act's effectivity.
