The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many early care and education providers in New Hampshire to struggle, with some closing temporarily or permanently due to financial, staffing, and health-related challenges. The New Hampshire Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five aims to improve access to quality child care by building a coordinated system. To achieve this, child care deserts - areas with insufficient child care slots - are being mapped using recent data and cutting-edge methodology, incorporating distance and availability of slots relative to the population of nearby families with young children. Geomapping is also informing the design of the New Hampshire Early Childhood Regions, which will support families with children ages birth to eight, and identifying opportunities for cross-system collaboration to address gaps in access.
